There are many stories behind the Point Reyes Shipwreck, some more colorful than others. Here is photographer Darcy Edl's favorite version of just how this boat ended up being one of the most photographed spots in Inverness, CA.
A fisherman took his boat out into the Pacific for a day of sea fishing. While out there, he decided to have a few beers. A few turned into many, and many turned into too many. He was bringing his boat back in to dock when he misjudged the tide and ran aground, literally wrecking the front end of the ship. He took on water and had to abandon the boat. Once he realized his mistake and that insurance would not cover the wreckage due to his drunkenness, he decided to make it look like his boat had caught on fire. So he took gasoline out, doused the ship, and lit the match. Unfortunately, the vessel was so wet from taking on water that it only burned a small section of the wood deck. Point Reyes finally beat him; the fisherman abandoned the ship for good and has left behind a photographer's dream!
