  • Burrowing Owls live underground in several areas of the United States, but Darcy Edl didn't even know they existed until moving to Arizona. These tiny creatures prefer to walk on the ground rather than fly and like to live in communities. They are protected animals, so when found in places where harm could come to them, they are "transplanted" to ensure their survival. 

    Did you notice the band on the leg of this owl? That is part of the transplant process so that researchers can note their progress. Again, other photographers have said to photoshop the band from the owl for this photo; Darcy won't do it because this is part of the owls' story.
