Burrowing Owls are a favorite in the home of photographer Darcy Edl. Knowing where to look for these little guys makes it easier to spot them in their natural habitat. This shot was taken with a Nikon D7100 and Tamron 600 zoom lens at Rio Salado Audubon Sanctuary in Phoenix, Arizona.

Burrowing Owls live underground in several areas of the United States, but Darcy Edl didn't even know they existed until moving to Arizona. These tiny creatures prefer to walk on the ground rather than fly and like to live in communities. They are protected animals, so when found in places where harm could come to them, they are "transplanted" to ensure their survival.
